Dorney Park 2018

Postby Yoshi » Wed Aug 16, 2017 11:08 pm

No new rides or attractions next year. All that is being added is a free season pass for kids that are 3 - 5 years old and a new food place in WWK. All Season Fast Lane Plus has also increased from $100 to $125.

I am very disappointed that the park isn't get anything after nothing in 2016 either (I'm not counting the new Thunderhawk trains). Michigan's Adventure is the only other park in the chain to get nothing next year. It's also frustrating that other parks in the chain Cedar Point gets Gatekeeper in 2013, Valravn in 2016 and now Steel Vengeance and even California's Great America gets 2 coasters since 2013. I know Dorney is one of the smaller parks in the chain but it is still annoying that Cedar Fair basically ignores the smaller parks. Even Winterfest would have been nice to see.

No Winterfest for 2018 is very disappointing to me. Such an announcement makes a great new for next year announcement without a great amount of capital expenditure. (To pull it off right, a couple of million will need to be spent on props, as municipal grade lights are not cheap. That being said, with proper care, they will last for decades.) It is getting hard to justify no Christmas event with the success of the events at Hershey and particularly Great Adventure.
The main thing that is holding the park back is if they operate more months of the year, they will lose their seasonal overtime exemption. The company should just let this go as it will help them hire better talent. The days of paying all employees less than eight dollars an hour are gone due to all the decent paying warehouse jobs in the area.
The zoning rules that apply to the parking lot will also need to be changed. Currently they are not allowed to use it past Oct 31st. (But they have anyway.) This will probably be a non-issue to get changed.

Well, from what I hear we are lucky the hours are not reduced. Not sure who can confirm but I am hearing about continued unresolved electrical issues, staff cut backs, sending empolyees home early and at times rides not being opened till later in the day...are all predominant this year...perhaps part of cost savings due to the wet summer..not sure. Personally, they frightened passholders away with pricing that is simply too expensive..especially if you don't care for the water park..and many I suspect are tiring of the haunt. I hope I am wrong...good thing they got the bumper cars....

When I was at Cedar Creek Flyers last week, I saw a sign near the ride control panel put away that stated the ride opens at 12. I never noticed it before, but I guess that is an example of a late ride opening.

I'm probably going to visit less and less. If I still lived close enough to Great Adventure to visit 20+ times a year like I used to I would probably rarely go to Dorney in the spring and fall. I'm probably going to get to Knoebels and Hershey more in the fall instead. Without WWK open, I get bored of the ride side of the park within 3 hours. The pricing has gotten bad. I went to WWK on a Friday a few weeks ago and they use weekend pricing on the lockers. A small locker is $25 and a large locker is $50! There is a $5 season pass discount but I refuse to pay $20 for a locker and waited until 5:00 when the small locker drops to $5.

I never knew that the park couldn't use the lot in November and December. I guess the 1 or 2 days they are open in November every few years when Halloween is on a Friday or Saturday isn't enough to cause a problem?

I have been wondering that myself. My guess is since the township makes so much money from the amusement tax, they will not give the park a hard time for operating a day or two late. I am sure there will be no issue changing the ordinance, after all, the current one was written for the park to exempt them from the number of planters requirement.
If I was a normal pass holder, there is no way I would renew for next year. Customer service has definitely been given a back seat, and the dining plan is terrible when compared with Six Flags (Both in selection and cost, particularly when you consider that Six Flags includes drinks). I was thinking of not renewing at all, but there is no way I can last thru next year and not ride the new RMC's at Cedar Point and Kings Dominion.

Some of the changes:
9 pm closings on Friday and Saturday early in the season instead of 10 pm.
WWK isn't open the Tuesday - Thursday after Labor Day
WWK is open until 8 pm everyday for part of July
WWK is open until 7 pm starting June 8th rather than starting until July
I like that there are 2 season pass preview days for WWK the week before Memorial Day. It's also good they got rid of the 6 pm closings on weekdays (except Friday) the week of Memorial Day and the week after.

The schedule was changed. Opening day is now May 4th instead of April 28th. Haunt doesn't start until September 21st now and the previous Saturday is now 11 to 7.

I love Dorney Park, but it continues to go down hill. I used to enjoy the other parks in the company, but I don't want to support a company that does not support my home park. It's really tough to support the park anymore, and it seems as if others feel the same. It's no longer busy, the people that do visit, don't come back, and it's just depressing. How can a park surrounded by New York and Philadelphia not do well, but Six Flags and Hershey continue to get better. I've always believed the park was just a few additions away from being great, but that was 10 years ago. They've only downsized since then. I'll still be there to visit in 2018, but I don't know how much longer.

I feel like the other parks do so much better because they continue to get new additions every year and major additions much more often than Dorney and they have become destination parks.

This past season, Great Adventure gets an amazing dark ride, Hershey gets 3 drop towers and Dorney gets a set of bumper cars worse than the other 2 parks and a spinning flat ride. 2016, Great Adventure gets a coaster, Dorney gets nothing. This year Hershey gets a water coaster and mat racers, Great Adventure gets a unique flat ride and Dorney again gets nothing.

Even locally with Dorney and Knoebels almost both the same distance away, most people go to Knoebels and I rarely hear anyone mention Dorney.

First they took away the season pass preview night the last Friday in April, pushed opening weekend to May, then they took away the Sunday season pass preview from WWK the weekend before Memorial Day weekend, and now the Saturday WWK preview day is gone from the calendar as well. I might go opening weekend and otherwise will probably won't visit until June. I was really looking forward to the preview days for WWK :x

Started as a destination for the Lehigh Valley, and unto that it appears to be returing. I'd be curious what the demographics look like for park visitors at this point. For better or worse, Philadephia and NYC bus charter traffic drove a lot of gate for DP for the better part of 30 years. I'm wondering if a good part of that traffic is going elsewhere now. Truthfully, if I was going to go to a park for a day and travel time wasn't an issue, I'd probably opt for Hershey over DP. Just not much of anything new happening for some time there. Of course, If I was looking for just an evening or a quick hitter, it would be DP all day, but that's the difference....the local park gets that kind of traffic, the bigger parks get the destination traffic. I just don't think that DP is the destination that it once was (or perhaps was once trying to be).

I don't even think Dorney is trying to be a destination anymore. Management just does not care and I'd be interested to see what morale is like at the park this year. I feel a lot of people visit once and don't go back, but the park is doing nothing to change that.

New for 2018 Dorney Park has gotten a new entrance sign to the parking lot. For comparative purposes, here is the old sign:

The new sign is brighter, I like having Snoopy on the older sign though.

I'm also glad to see the cars are on the ride at Cedar Creek Flyers in that picture. I thought there was a chance it was going to be closed this year. The location didn't seem great and now with no Stinger next to it, I expect hardly anyone will walk down there except during Haunt.
