A Sunday early in the season would be the best option to go, or a weekday in June but they can be bad with school trips sometimes. Just check the event calendar to make sure there are no concerts or events (like a Scout weekend) since they can add to crowds.
The park opens at 10:30, get there at opening. Because there are no hotels near the park, from 10:30 to 12:00 the park is usually empty and plenty of chances for re-rides (which the park allows and encourages if there is no line unlike Dorney)
You can get a ticket for $41.99 on their site, if season passes are still cheap and you plan to go more than once, that is an option too. I live almost an equal distance from Dorney and Great Adventure so I go to both parks 10+ times each year. I paid $75 for a 3 park season pass for 2012. Sometimes the Coke cans have $20 off admission but that is still $44.99.
Nitro is my favorite coaster, the only bad thing is that it kind of ruined Steel Force for me because Nitro is such a better ride. Also Kingda Ka, El Toro, Superman, Green Lantern, Batman The Ridew and Bizarro are the other major coasters. Bizarro also a floorless like Hydra is a way better ride than Hydra. The Sawmill Log Flume is also nice, it's a very long flume with 3 drops.
All the coasters and water rides except the kiddie coasters and Rolling Thunder and Runaway Mine Train have lockers outside the ride. You can't take anything in line with you that won't fit in your pockets except refillable souvenir soda bottles. They are $1 and you have to get your stuff out in 2 hours or less. If you plan on using them and lines are short, you could use the lockers at Nitro for example and then ride Nitro, Batman The Ride and The Dark Knight since all are so close.
All day lockers are I think $13 and in the middle of the park in the boardwalk and at the entrance. I'd wait until the end of the day to get anything souvenirs so you don't need to use the lockers.
